Everyone knows Bob Dylan is one hell of a storyteller. Sure doesn’t he even have a Nobel Prize for it? He’s a wizard with the words. So that’s why you can be guaranteed this 1962 tune still packs a hell of a punch.
Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Willie tells the story behind the famous Dead Man’s Hand in the way that only Bob Dylan can. And if you want to learn more about the history of it, you can read our history of the Dead Man’s Hand for good measure. Just be warned though, there is some nudity in the YouTube video for this song.
Maybe we’re a little late, but it’s also a greatest songs about poker for Halloween too. So if you’re still in a spooky mood, why not stick this one on.
Cast your mind back to 10 years ago. Musically, it was the era of emo and new wave. It was perhaps the peak of online poker, where virtual stars were fast becoming mainstream personas. Economically, it was when a dramatic global financial crisis was really taking hold. Okay, maybe you shouldn’t think about that too hard. But the rest was pretty fun, wasn’t it?
It was also the age of the mash up and unexpected covers. And Kids/Poker Face by Weezer from 2009 is a key proponent of both music fashions. This is one great tune to bop along to while you’re multi-tabling. It keeps things interesting and is a surprisingly good listen, even if you weren’t wild about the originals.
Suffered a bad beat? Going through a streak of bad luck? It’s okay, it happens to all of us. The best thing to do about that is to dust yourself off and try not to think about it, of course.
But we all deserve a little wallow from time to time. So if you’re unlucky in poker, or in fact in love, Losing Hand by Ray Charles is your perfect soundtrack. This 1957 gem is all heart (even if that heart is broken) and is one of the greatest songs about poker we know. To be fair, it doesn’t talk about great strategy and we’re not entirely sure a joker really deserves a place in the card game, but we’d be happy to listen to this song all day long.
